“Jeg vil være Kalif i stedet for Kaliffen!” Denne korte sætning er præmissen for en af de sjoveste euroklassikere, “Iznogood”, skrevet af franskmanden René Goscinny og tegnet af franskmanden Jean Tabary. Og citatet er nu blevet en del af det franske sprog, og bliver brugt til at beskrive en over-ambitiøs person.
René Goscinny er en af de bedste franske tegneserie forfattere nogensinde, faktisk et af mediets få superstjerne forfattere. Hans to største succéser er “Astérix” og “Lucky Luke”, som også herhjemme har været blandt de absolut mest populære fransk-belgiske serier. Den tredie store humor serie af Goscinny, “Iznogood”, har også været utrolig populær i Danmark, og er blevet udgivet både i Super Serien fra Lademann og i egen album serie, der udkom på hhv. Gutenberghus, Interpresse, og Carlsen Comics. 15 albums i egen serie er det blevet til på dansk, men i Frankrig er de nu oppe på 28 albums, hvoraf det seneste, nr. 28: Les mille et une nuits du Calife (The Thousand and One Nights of the Caliph), blev udgivet i november 2008. Så vi har en del albums til gode på dansk. Men Goscinnys historier har vi vist fået allesammen på dansk. Goscinny døde i 1977 og Tabary har fortsat serien siden da på egen hånd og har selv skrevet historierne på de efterfølgende albums, akkurat som Uderzo har gjort det på “Astérix”.
Goscinny var så stor en humorist og forfatter, at hans tre hovedserier ikke har kunnet holde samme høje niveau efter hans død. Men jeg er nu også med på de albums, der ikke er forfattet af Goscinny. Spørgsmålet er dog, om ikke man skulle stoppe med “Iznogood” med album nr. 28, hvor Tabary har overladt det kreative arbejde til sine børn.

FRANCE – Iznogoud returns yet again! After an absence of 4 years (the last new Iznogoud book was published in 2004), Iznogoud is coming back with a brand new adventure entitled “Les mille et une nuits du Calife” (The Thousand and One Nights of the Caliph). Now we know what the Tabary website was hinting at back in 2007. This will be the 28th Iznogoud book, scheduled to be published in November 2008.
Additionally, the news is out that Iznogoud illustrator Jean Tabary has decided to retire after over 50 years of work in the comics world, passing the torch on to his children: Stephan, Nicolas and Muriel. With this new book, Muriel and Stephan will be taking over the writing while Nicolas (who has already done work with his father previously) takes over the illustration of the Iznogoud series.
This is indeed very big news, and I would like to take a moment to congratulate Jean Tabary for his many years of service in creating Iznogoud, and to wish him well on his well-deserved retirement. It is good to know that Iznogoud will not be retiring from his never-ending goal to become Caliph instead of the Caliph, but that he will live on in new adventures carried forth by Tabary’s own children.
Tabary mødte Goscinny på “Vaillant” bladet i 1961, og i 1962 skabte de sammen serien “Iznogood”, som debuterede i “Record” bladet den 15. januar 1962, med kaliffen som hovedfigur.

RECORD – Iznogoud made his first appearance in the pages of Record magazine #1 in 1962, and continued to be published there until 1973. Record continued to publish some of the same Iznogoud stories simultaneously with Pilote starting in 1968.
PILOTE – Starting in 1968, Iznogoud appeared in Pilote magazine (and later in Pilote Mensual) and continued until 1977.
CIRCUS – In 1981, Circus magazine ran the story “L’enfance d’Iznogoud” in issues 35-40.
LES CAHIERS DE LA BANDE DESSINÉE – Though no stories were published there, Iznogoud appeared on the cover of Les Cahiers de la Bande Dessinée magazine #29 in 1976, in a special edition devoted to Tabary. The magazine was filled with a number of Iznogoud drawings, some of them exclusive to the magazine.

The original English translations of Iznogoud were published in Britain by Egmont/Methuen and translated by Anthea Bell and Derek Hockridge (famous for their excellent English translations of the Asterix series). There was also one alternate English version translated by Beatrice Soss, and published by Dargaud International in the USA. This translation is a bit different, and most of the other character names in it are different as well.
