Being into vintage movie poster art and vintage cult fiction paperbacks, I couldn’t help but notice one illustrator who really stood out from the rest. You’ll know him from the Bond, Barbarella, Matt Helm, and Breakfast at Tiffany’s posters, the one who draws those pale, slim ladies with those pretty, dainty, sexy feet, the one with the pale, cold fleshtones, the one who masters the compositions, the fashions, the true spirit of the sixties, the peak decade for pop culture. The four cornerstones of pop culture are movies, music, comics, and cult fiction, and McGinnis left his indelible mark on two of these, and defined the cool decade like no-one else. He was truly king of the sixties and definitely deserving of his honored place in the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame, alongside such giants as Norman Rockwell.
You don’t have to buy yourself to the poorhouse in order to enjoy the fine lowbrow art of Robert McGinnis, for there is a lavish artbook of his stunning illustrations available through Bud Plant, a necessary supplement to your comic collection:
And the good girl master is the subject of a DVD documentary, of which you can see the trailer promo here:
